Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
