Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
